7 LIFE-CHANGING SHLOKAS FROM THE BHAGAVAD GITA (PART 3: THE APPEARANCE OF THE LORD)

 In the previous posts, I have mentioned about some of the best shlokas from the Bhagavad Gita. Click on the following links to read those posts.

In this post, I am going to cover some shlokas about the appearance of Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. These are also perhaps some of the most famous shlokas from the Bhagavad Gita. They occur in chapter 4: The Transcendental Knowledge

1.  यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत |

अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् || (4.7)

yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata

abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṁ sṛijāmyaham

' Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice. O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise in irreligion- at that time I descend Myself '

2.   परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् |

धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय सम्भवामि युगे युगे || (4.8)

paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśhāya cha duṣhkṛitām

dharma-sansthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge

'To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I myself appear, millennium after millennium.'

These verses clearly explains the purpose and time of the occurrence of the Lord. Although Lord Krishna appears at the end of Dvapara Yuga of the twenty-eighth millennium of the seventh Manu in one day of Brahma, He is not obliged to follow these rules and can appear according to His will. Whenever there is a decline in religious practices and increase in irreligiousness, the Lord appears to protect his devotees, annihilate the evil and reestablish religious practices. According to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada, the Founder Acharya of International Society for Krishna Consciousness,"Only the Lord can manufacture a system of religion. Therefore the principles of Dharma are the direct orders of the Lord. At the end of Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna explains that the highest principle of religion is to surrender unto Him."

According to the Bhagavad Gita, a man in Krishna Consciousness is to be considered as a saadhu (holy man) while a person who doesn't care for Krishna Consciousness is called dushkritam (miscreant). It is also wrong to believe that the Lord appears to destroy the evil; the agents of the Lord are competent enough to destroy them, but the Lord appears especially to please his pure devotees, who are always harassed by the miscreants. He protects and pleases his unalloyed devotees who are anxious to see him in his orginal Vrindavana pastimes.
